Behind the Scenes: The Materials I Use to Bring Your Vision to Life

Creating a beautiful piece of art starts long before the first splash of colour hits the paper. As an illustrator, every material I choose plays a key role in how your story comes to life — whether it’s a dreamy portrait, a live event illustration, or a meaningful commission. I wanted to take a moment to share a little about the tools I use, and why, so you can feel confident that your piece is not only created with care, but with quality and longevity in mind.

Starting with You - Studio Portraits

Before I pick up a brush or pencil, my process always begins with you. We'll have a chat about what you'd like, and once all agreed, I'll ask for some reference photo's. I then create a detailed sketch and share samples early on via email, so you can see how things are shaping up and feel reassured that we’re on the same page. This collaborative stage ensures you’re completely happy with the direction — it’s important to me that you feel involved and excited about what’s being created especially for you.

Any reference images you share with me will be deleted from my files once our project is finished, and nothing gets shared on Social Media without your written consent.

My Favourite Tools: Why They Matter

When it comes to colour, I primarily work with Derwent watercolour Inktense pencils. These are rich, vibrant, and — importantly — permanent once dry. The intensity of colour they provide helps me capture emotion and depth in a way that really makes a piece pop.

For those moments where a softer, more ethereal feel is needed, I’ll reach for Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolour paints. They lend a dreamy quality that works beautifully for flowing dresses, natural scenery, or delicate moments. It’s all about finding the right mood and making sure the medium suits the message.

To finish, I often add ink detailing to bring drama, structure, and a strong visual impact. These final touches help define the work and add that little extra flair that makes each piece feel polished and alive. I've even been known to add glitter in the past at the couples request. Ultimately its about creating an image that reflects you.

For paper I use Cass Art 350gsm smooth off white, acid free watercolour paper, so I know the paper can provide longevity.

Live Illustration: Keeping Things Beautiful and Practical

When illustrating live at events, I adapt my process slightly to suit the setting. Here, I rely on my Inktense pencils paired with a water barrel brush — no open water pots or messy palettes. This setup allows me to work efficiently and cleanly, so you and your guests can enjoy the experience without worry. Even on the go, I prioritise quality, detail, and a professional finish.

Again, I respect your privacy and will only post images to my Social Media platforms with your written consent, after the event.

Thoughtful, Tailored, and Made to Last

Everything I create is designed to feel personal and meaningful to you. I choose materials that are high-quality, artist-grade, and archival, I always advise framing your illustration behind glass upon delivery to ensure it remains as beautiful as the day your received it.
