Why Wearing Colour on Your Wedding Day is Rocking, Radiant & Ridiculously Smart

Let’s be honest—how often do you actually wear white? Outside of the staple white T.shirt and maybe a beach holiday, (I don’t even wear it then) it’s the one colour most of us avoid for fear of stains, spills, and looking like we’re about to conduct a medical exam. So why, on your most fabulous, joyful, danced-until-2am day, would you choose the most high-maintenance colour of them all?
Let’s talk about coloured wedding dresses—yes, pinks, blues, golds, blacks, silvers, florals, and everything in between—and why they’re not just acceptable, but absolutely fabulous.

1. Convenience: No One Wants to Be a Walking Napkin
White is beautiful until you try to eat canapés, drink champagne, hug 90 people, and survive a muddy garden photo session. One drop of anything and it’s game over. Where as wearing colour on your wedding day, well that hides a multitude of sins. Red wine? Camouflaged. Grass stains? Chic. Confetti explosion? Adds texture!
2. Style with a Story
Colours let you tell a story. A hot pink for frivolity, emerald green for nature lovers, rich burgundy for drama, or a deep midnight blue for timeless elegance. You can choose a shade that reflects your personality, your interests, or even the season. You’re not just
wearing an outfit —you’re making a statement. Besides, if like me, whites, creams or ivories, just don’t suit me and I wouldn’t feel like me in white, I wouldn’t feel my best.
3. Memorability Factor: Sky High
Let’s be real—how many full on white outfits do you actually remember from the weddings you've attended? A coloured outfit sticks in people’s minds. “Remember Jo’s vibrant purple wedding outfit? So dreamy.” You become the couple people talk about—in the best way.
4. Wear It Again (and Actually Mean It)
Most white wedding outfits are destined for a sad, crinkled retirement in a garment bag. But a coloured outfit? You might actually want to wear it again—to a gala, a fancy dinner, or even just because it’s Tuesday and you feel fabulous. That’s not just fashion—it’s smart investing.
5. Because Rules Are Meant to Be Broken

The white dress / outfit tradition only became standard in the 19th century thanks to Queen Victoria (who, by the way, wore white to stand out, not blend in). Before that, people wore their ‘Sunday best’—any colour. So really, going coloured is more traditional than white, in a full-circle kind of way.
6. Wearing Colour on your Wedding Day: Illustrations Look Better, Too
Ok, I’m being cheeky here, but as a wedding illustrator, let me tell you: coloured outfits are a dream to draw. They catch light, movement, and mood in ways white never could. Want your wedding portraits to be art-worthy? Give us something vibrant to work with.
Final Thought: Wear What Makes You Feel Like You.
Whether you're rocking crimson tulle, a dusty blue two-piece, or a dramatic black number, the most important thing is that you feel amazing, confident, and completely you. And if white does that for you? Great. But if colour is calling your name—don't let tradition hush your vibe.
It’s your day. Be bold. Be colourful. Be unforgettable.
