Choosing a wedding illustrator is about so much more than finding someone who can draw.
Your wedding artwork is something that could hang in your home for years to come, becoming a reminder of one of the most important days of your life. So while price, availability, and packages are all important, the biggest question to ask is:
Does this illustrator understand you?
The right wedding illustrator should not just capture what you look like. They should capture who you are, the feeling of your wedding, your personalities, your story, and all those little details that make your relationship unique.
Look for an illustrator whose style matches your wedding vibe
One of the biggest mistakes couples make is choosing an illustrator based purely on price.
Of course, budgets matter, but your wedding artwork is a personal piece of art.
The cheapest option may not always be the one that feels right for you.
Instead, think about the overall feeling you want your artwork to have.
Is your wedding romantic and traditional? Modern and editorial? Alternative and colourful? Fun and unconventional?
Your illustrator should understand that vibe.
For example, if you are planning an rocking wedding, choosing an illustrator who already creates artwork that reflects rocking couples, fashion, and personalities will likely create something much more authentic than choosing someone whose style feels completely different.
Look through their portfolio and ask yourself:
Do I connect with the people they illustrate?
Can I imagine my wedding represented in this style?
Does their artwork feel like us?
Would I still love this piece hanging in my home in 5 or 10 years?
Your wedding illustration should feel like an extension of your story, not just a beautiful image.

Look for an illustrator who sees you as an individual
The best wedding illustrations come from understanding the people behind the wedding day.
When I work with couples, I want to know more than just what they are wearing. I want to know their story.
I ask questions like:
How did you meet?
What makes your relationship unique?
What parts of yourselves do you want highlighted?
Which details from your wedding day matter most?
Every couple is different, and every wedding is different.
Your illustration does not have to be a generic image of two people standing together. It can include the things that make your relationship yours.
That could be your favourite song, your pets, your family, your hobbies, your tattoos, your fashion, or any other meaningful details.
Look carefully at their portfolio
When choosing a wedding illustrator, take time to really study their previous work.
A portfolio should show creativity, variety, and individuality.
Ask yourself:
Do all the artworks look the same?
Are all the couples in similar poses?
Does every piece follow the same structure?
If every illustration looks almost identical, it could suggest the artist relies heavily on templates. While having a recognisable style is a good thing, your wedding artwork should still feel unique to you.
Look for an illustrator who can adapt their style to different couples, personalities, and wedding stories.
Inclusivity should be part of an illustrator's work
Representation matters.
When looking through an illustrator's website and portfolio, look at the people they include.
Are you seeing different body shapes, ages, skin tones, cultures, abilities, and styles?
Are your friends and family reflected in their artwork?
For example, if someone important to you uses a wheelchair, would you trust that illustrator to represent them with elegance, confidence, and pride?
Inclusivity should not feel like a trend or something added afterwards. It should naturally be part of an illustrator's approach.
The language an illustrator uses on their website can also tell you a lot.
Do they make assumptions about every couple being a Bride and Groom? Do they welcome couples who want a more modern or non-traditional wedding experience?
You want someone who listens, understands, and supports your choices.
Find an illustrator who captures personality, not just appearance
A great wedding illustration is not only about creating a likeness.
It is about capturing the essence of someone.
One couple who really highlights this is Ami and Gary.

Ami had a very clear vision for their wedding artwork. She wanted it to feel like the opening sequence of a James Bond movie and include their first dance song, "Nobody Does It Better."
The artwork also needed to reflect the colours of their wedding and work beautifully in their lounge where it would eventually hang.
They chose me because they connected with my previous work combining songs with fashion illustrations. But there was another important reason.
My illustration style celebrates real bodies.
As a curvier bride, Ami wanted someone who would represent her authentically. She wanted her tattoos, her beautiful curves, and everything that makes her Ami to be included.
She also has teenage daughters, and the body-positive message behind the artwork mattered to her. She wanted to create something that celebrated confidence and showed them that beauty comes in many forms.
This is why finding the right creative match matters.
The artwork was not just a drawing of a couple. It was a celebration of who they are.
Ask about the wedding illustration process before booking
A professional wedding illustrator should be able to explain how they work with couples.
Before creating artwork, I spend time getting to know each couple because those conversations help me create something meaningful.
I want to understand the story behind the wedding and what makes them unique.
I once worked with two brides who wanted their cats included in their wedding artwork for their home.
They sent me photographs of their cats, but I didn't simply copy the photos and place them into the illustration. I designed the cats so they felt like they belonged naturally within the artwork and became part of the story.
Those details are what make a bespoke wedding illustration special.
Communication matters just as much as creativity
Your wedding illustrator will become part of your wedding journey, so choose someone you feel comfortable with.
Planning a wedding should be exciting, not stressful.
I regularly check in with my couples because I know how worrying it can feel when a wedding supplier becomes difficult to reach.
Honest communication is incredibly important.
For live wedding illustration, I am upfront with couples about what is realistically possible. I can usually complete around 5–6 live illustrations per hour, and I discuss this beforehand so couples know exactly what to expect.
If there are guests who cannot be completed on the wedding day, I am happy to finish some illustrations afterwards.
Trust comes from honesty, and trust is essential when someone is creating artwork connected to one of the biggest days of your life.

Before choosing your illustrator, consider asking:
How would you describe your illustration style?
Do you create bespoke artwork or work from templates?
Can you show examples of different couples and weddings?

How do you approach inclusivity in your work?

How many live illustrations can you realistically complete?
What happens if some illustrations cannot be completed on the wedding day?
How will we communicate throughout the process?
The answers will help you decide whether they are the right person to capture your story.

My biggest piece of advice is simple:
Choose an illustrator whose style you genuinely love.
Remember, this artwork may hang in your home for many years. Ask yourself whether you will still love that style in 5 or 10 years.
Choose someone whose work makes you feel something.
Choose someone who sees you as an individual.
Choose someone who understands your wedding, your values, and the story you want to tell.
A wedding illustrator is not just creating a picture. They are creating a piece of your history.
